baby steps

Check out June's latest trick.

and again...

She refuses to walk or stand when we try to help her, but every once in a while she'll throw us a bone and show off her skills.

Also, today she started climbing to the top of the stairs on her own - and she's fast. So we started the lessons on how to go down safely. Do any of you have tips for dealing with stairs and toddlers? I'd love to avoid a gate if I can.

That is so adorable. I hope she'll still do it for us at beach week. That reminds me of Mei Li at that age. She would stand up and dance, but not walk until she was 14 months!

What a cutie! Stairs and Toddlers... I don't have much advice, its a tricky one. You just have to teach them as soon as they learn to go, they need to know how to come down.

After my girls watched this about five times in a row, Jane said, "Mom, can I go there?" So can she? I'll send her on over okay? She'll teach June how to walk and go down the stairs backwards! That's my only advice about stairs, teach them how to get back down. My girls for the longest time would go up and then lay on their tummies at th top, calling to me. That's fine too, as long as they are afraid of coming back down until you are there.

We don't have any gates because I don't like them. And, yes, it did result in a few broken bones our first days in the house, almost five years ago. But overall, we've had success. Our kids very rarely fall down the stairs, and they know how to crawl up and down at an earlier age. It involves an intense week or two (or more) of closely monitoring and showing them how to get down on all fours and crawl backwards down the stairs, but once they've got it down it's so nice to not have to worry. (Also, enlist your boys to know how to help her -- they may like helping her, and you, out that way.)

Try having Ryan watch her for a night. Jack went head first down our stairs on "Ryan's watch" and never tried it (without major hesitation) again.

Most success came from showing and reshowing how to turn around and crawl down. After awhile it wasn't a big deal.

Good luck miss June!
